The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is a process designed to welcome and form adults who seek to become members of the Catholic Church. It serves as a means for individuals touched by the grace of the Holy Spirit to encounter Christ and enter into communion with the Church.
Key Purposes of OCIA:
Introduction to the Mystery of Christ and the Church: OCIA gradually introduces catechumens to the knowledge of Christ and the Church. This process is analogous to the natural development and growth of life.
Personal Encounter with Christ: The act of imparting faith necessitates a personal encounter with Christ, conversion of heart and daily life, and experiencing the Holy Spirit within the ecclesial community.
Sacramental Preparation: OCIA prepares adults to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist, through which they are fully incorporated into the Church. Baptism signifies a new birth and participation in the life of Christ. Confirmation strengthens the baptized with the gifts of the Spirit. The Eucharist nourishes them with the food of eternal life, making them full members of Christ's Mystical Body.
Ongoing Formation and Mystagogy: Following the reception of the sacraments, the period of mystagogy helps neophytes (newly initiated Christians) to more fully grasp the treasures of divine life and progress toward the perfection of charity. This involves catechesis that helps them understand the sacraments they have received and how to live as Christian disciples.
OCIA meets regularly on Sundays between October and Easter Sunday. For more information about the OCIA or to enroll, please contact the parish office at 856-797-0999 or e-mail [email protected].
